Common Questions About Cycling the Royal Canal
Everything you need to know about our guided tours and cycling experiences for seniors on the Dublin greenway
Yes, it's completely flat. The Royal Canal follows the waterway from Dublin westward, and water doesn't climb hills, so you won't encounter any significant slopes. It's perfect if you're looking for an easy, low-impact ride without worrying about gears or steep sections.
Our guided tours range from 12 to 25 kilometres depending on the route you choose, and we set a relaxed pace that's manageable for most people. You don't need to be an athlete—we're here to enjoy the scenery and the history of the canal, not race. Most of our participants are returning to cycling after years away, and they do just fine.
We can help you sort that out. We offer bike rental through our partners, and they'll make sure it's comfortable and well-maintained before you ride. If you've got a bike at home, bring it along—our guides can give it a quick check and make minor adjustments to the seat height and handlebars to suit you.
Spring and early autumn are lovely—mild weather, longer daylight, and fewer crowds. Summer works well too, though it can get busy on weekends. Winter's doable if you don't mind the cold and occasional wet days, but we'd recommend checking conditions first. Spring (April to May) and September offer the best combination of weather and light.
Absolutely. The Royal Canal has plenty of spots to pull over—benches, picnic areas, and cafés at villages along the way like Ashtown and Blanchardstown. Our guides know all the good stopping points, and we build in breaks for refreshments and stretching. No one's rushing on our tours.
Bring water, sunscreen, and comfortable clothes—nothing fancy needed. We recommend a light snack too if you're riding more than 15 kilometres. Our group tours typically have 6 to 12 people, so it stays friendly and manageable. Everyone gets personal attention from our guide, and we go at the pace of the slowest rider.
