Who I Am

Cycling Advocate for Active Ageing

I've spent the last 14 years helping older adults discover the joy of cycling on Ireland's most accessible routes. My background combines a degree in Sports Science from Trinity College Dublin with hands-on experience working alongside community centres and Active Retirement groups across the country. The Royal Canal Greenway isn't just a route I've documented—it's a place I've come to know intimately through conversations with over 200 seniors who cycle it regularly. What started as a personal mission to help my father find suitable cycling routes has become my life's work: proving that quality outdoor experiences shouldn't require extreme fitness or expensive gear. They're available to everyone willing to step outside.

I hold a postgraduate diploma in Active Ageing from University College Cork (2015) and believe deeply that accessibility and enjoyment shouldn't be competing priorities. They work together.

Background

Professional Journey

01

Active Ageing Research & Education

Completed postgraduate diploma in Active Ageing at University College Cork in 2015. Focused on gerontology, outdoor health, and physical activity intervention for older adults. This foundation shaped my understanding of the barriers—both real and perceived—that prevent seniors from engaging in regular cycling.

02

Community-Based Accessibility Audits

Over a decade working directly with community centres, local councils, and Active Retirement Ireland groups to assess cycling infrastructure. I've conducted detailed route surveys, accessibility evaluations, and gathered feedback from hundreds of older cyclists. This work revealed what actually works on the ground—not just in theory.

03

Royal Canal Greenway Specialist

Documented the complete 40-kilometre route from Dublin to Mullingar, conducted interviews with regular cyclists, identified accessibility features and challenges, and created practical guides for different ability levels. The Greenway became my research laboratory—a real-world space where theory meets practice.

04

Senior Leisure Activities Editor at bryan-newberry

Currently leading content creation focused on accessible outdoor recreation for older adults. Developing comprehensive guides, route documentation, and practical advice that turns my decade of field research into actionable resources. Every article reflects real conversations with real cyclists.

Areas of Focus

What I Specialise In

Cycling for Older Adults

I focus on removing barriers that prevent seniors from cycling regularly. That means practical advice on bike comfort, pacing, route selection, and building confidence. It's not about racing or extreme distances—it's about discovering routes you'll actually want to ride, understanding your own pace, and enjoying the experience. I've worked with cyclists from their sixties through their nineties, and I've learned that age isn't the limiting factor. Access and confidence are.

My approach starts with listening. What stops someone from cycling? Is it physical discomfort? Route anxiety? Social factors? Once you understand the real barrier, the solution becomes clear.

Royal Canal Greenway & Flat-Terrain Routes

The Royal Canal Greenway is Ireland's most accessible cycling route—40 kilometres of nearly flat towpath between Dublin and Mullingar. I've documented every section, identified rest spots, noted surface conditions, and mapped accessibility features. I've interviewed cyclists who use it weekly, parents pushing children, older riders rebuilding fitness, and everyone in between. This route is special because it proves that great cycling experiences don't require mountains or dramatic landscapes. They require thoughtful infrastructure and good company.

Beyond the Greenway, I've surveyed dozens of flat routes across Ireland suitable for seniors. I understand what makes a route accessible, safe, and genuinely enjoyable.
